Can Orkas run Codex?

Yes. Codex is one of the CLI agent backends Orkas ships, alongside Claude Code, OpenCode, OpenClaw and Hermes. Orkas starts the Codex app-server the CLI already provides and drives it over that protocol, so it uses the Codex you have installed and the account you have already signed in with.

Is there an open-source alternative to Codex CLI?

Codex CLI is itself open source, under Apache 2.0, so this is not an open-versus-closed question. What is closed is the account: it runs on a ChatGPT plan or an OpenAI API key. Orkas is MIT licensed and works with managed official models or your own provider key, but it is a desktop team rather than a coding agent — it does not replace Codex inside a repository.

Do I need an OpenAI account to use Orkas?

No. Orkas works with managed official models out of the box, or with your own provider key if you prefer — in which case the calls go directly to that provider. An OpenAI account is only needed if you want Orkas to drive Codex, because Codex signs in on its own.

What does Orkas add that a coding agent does not cover?

The half of shipping that is not code: the launch video, the editable deck, the office documents, the comparison and SEO pages, the report you send a customer. Those are separate specialist agents working on the same folders, and no repository is required to start.
